About Candy Verney
Abouit2

Candy Verney's passion is to inspire and create, through singing, a sense of harmony which gives an experience beyond the ordinary.

Developing out of her close connection with the natural world, Candy’s work explores patterns in nature, vibration and sound in different acoustic spaces, deepening singers’ connection both to the natural world and to each other, with a lot of fun along the way.

Creating communities through singing

She is a skilled facilitator, excelling in breaking down barriers and creating communities through singing. She has extensive experience in teaching mixed ability groups in varied situations, including businesses, universities, hospitals - working both with staff and patients - social services and education.  She is in regular demand throughout the UK and mainland Europe.

"What I thought so special about Candy is that she thinks that everyone can sing, as we can breathe and speak. But her fine teaching skills, musical sensitivity, knowledge and vision of the musical whole, mean that the experience of singing with her is essentially a musical one. It is about listening and shaping the music, and making really good music together"

Group singing has a power unlike any other to bind people together. More traditional communities have known this, and we are rediscovering this today. Singing is fun and singing is good for you. Singers regularly report the benefits to their health. After the stress and frustrations of daily life, many leave the sessions energised and full of renewed vigour. Those with serious health conditions report that they feel a real sense of healing and comfort.

Community choirs

Over the last 13 years Candy has founded and built up 5 community choirs in Bath and West Wiltshire, called Singing in the Round. The emphasis is on singing for the sheer joy of it, experiencing a wide range of music, building a singing community and getting together for celebratory gatherings in special places.  She has also trained and inspired several other choir leaders who now run choirs of their own, resulting in 13 new choirs in the area- almost every town in West Wiltshire has a community choir.

"We laugh and learn and sing with such enthusiasm and sensitivity, which all stems from the unique gift you have of creating a space where everyone feels valued, welcomed and part of something special"

Sounding It Out was formed in 2009 to share the choir’s enjoyment for the music with a wider world  and to use love of singing to build peace and understanding wherever the opportunity arises, including with choirs abroad and in UK

Singing holidays

Candy combines her love of singing, building singing communities, with her love of nature by running several Singing Holidays each year in remote places in Britain.   She also leads a variety of day trips to special places- ancient buildings in the south west UK- Wells Cathedral, Bath Abbey, or landscapes that already have their own resonance, such as the ancient stones of Avebury.

Candy has written two Singing Books for Early Years: The Singing Day and The Singing Year. These well-received books have the aim of encouraging parents and early years practitioners to sing with children.  As a result of requests following her workshops, Candy now offers her own Choral Arrangements of songs she teaches.

She is a member of the Natural Voice Practitioners Network
